Barbara, all I know about AES is what I read in the papers, and the
> damage the project is causing is horrible. AES is spending hundreds of
> thousands of dollars with PR to plug their case as socially important.
> A petition to declare PILA an endangered World Heritage Patrimony is
> under consideration by an UNESCO committee.
>
> The damage is unimaginable. Attached is a list of endangered species of
> plants. The last column is of PILA.
>
> Best wishes,
>
I'm hooked on patacones also, having first tried them at the Canopy Tower in Panama. Since that first trip to Panama, I bought two plantain presses, one for flat patacones and the other one to make little baskets. A fun thing to serve with the little baskets is cerviche, which turns this seafood soup into a 'finger food'. They are also great served with warmed salsa.

I agree with Chef Schwartz that Costa Rica has gotten expensive, but I highly recommend Panama.

I have also rafted the Rio Mamoni and it was a really great day. Some fun rapids, including one narrow spot where the raft got stuck and water was pouring in to the bow and almost stole some shoes, but we got out and were laughing so hard it was great! We saw lot's of bird life, toucans, etc. as well as some otters and a hidden boa constrictor that my Embera' Indian companion spotted for us all. I would definately go again.
