Location: Between the fishing port of Quepos and the famous Manuel Antonio Park, nature's beauty and beaches are all close by.  About 30 minutes flight from San Jose, or 3 hours overland. 

Accommodations:   The first structure at Makanda by the Sea was the Large Villa, originally designed as a home. This villa now hosts the three attractive Studios 2, 3, and 4 on the lower level and the larger "Villa 1" on the upper level. It is unique in that these rooms may remain private or may be interconnected in various combinations (to accommodate up to 8 guests) by way of gardens, patios, and stairways. All rooms are fully equipped to accommodate guests needs as a group or independently, and all offer private entrances.

  • The Large Villa - This house offers Villa 1 and Studios 2, 3, and 4. It is unique in that these rooms may remain private, or may be interconnected in various combinations (to accommodate up to 8 guests) by way of gardens, patios and stairways. All rooms are fully equipped to accommodate guests needs as a group or independently, and all offer private entrances.
  • Villa 1 -Contains one thousand square feet with hardwood vaulted ceilings, Japanese garden and panoramic ocean view. It features air conditioning, a king size bed, large wrap around sofa, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, telephone, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, internet connection and much more. The hammock and carefully placed ceiling fans will keep you comfortable. It’s unique design allows sliding glass doors to open letting you experience on shore breezes and spectacular ocean views.   
  • Villa 5 -A unit of nine hundred and fifty square feet with vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods and a large Japanese garden. It features air conditioning, a king size bed, a large wrap around sofa, fully equipped kitchen, telephone, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, and much more. The dining area is located on the large terrace, along with chairs and a hammock.    
  • Villa 6 - An individual unit of nine hundred and fifty square feet with vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods and a large Japanese garden. It features air conditioning, a king size bed, large sofa, fully equipped kitchen, telephone, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hairdryer, and much more. The dining area is located on the large terrace, along with chairs and a hammock.    
  • Villa 7 - Nestled into the jungle mountainside uniquely hidden by the pool and perfect for monkey sighting. It is a one bedroom suite, offering a separate bedroom with a king size bed, and a glass enclosed living area with a large wrap around sofa. It also features a spacious dining area, full kitchen, telephone, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, and much more. This unit is air conditioned for your comfort, and has it's own private terrace with chairs and a hammock.   
  • Villa 8 - A unit of nine hundred and fifty square feet with vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods and a large Japanese garden. This Villa is our only unit furnished with two side by side queen size beds. It also features a fully equipped kitchen, telephone, a large wrap around sofa, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hairdryer and is air conditioned for your comfort. The dining area is located on the spacious terrace, along with chairs and a hammock.   
  • Villa 10 - A unit of nine hundred and fifty square feet with vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods and a large Japanese garden. It features air conditioning, a king size bed, a large wrap around sofa, fully equipped kitchen, telephone, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, and much more. The dining area is located on the large terrace, along with chairs and a hammock.    
  • Deluxe Studio 9 - Located directly below Villa 8. It features air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchenette, telephone, dining area, a king size bed, large sofa, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, and much more. It also boasts a large terrace with chairs and a hammock.    
  • Deluxe Studio 11 - Located directly below Villa 10. It features air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchenette, telephone, dining area, a king size bed, large sofa, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, and much more. It also boasts a large terrace with chairs and a hammock.    
  • Studios 2 and 4 - Both are located below and to either side of Villa 1. They both feature vaulted ceilings of precious hardwoods, air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchenette, telephone, king size bed, large sofa, dining area, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, private balcony with chairs, and a small Japanese garden.    
  • Studio 3 - Located directly below Villa 1, between Studios 2 and 4. It features a fully equipped kitchenette, telephone, king size bed, large sofa, dining area, air conditioning, cable tv, cd player with iPod dock, hair dryer, and much more. Enjoy a fabulous view from your spacious balcony with chairs.  
 
Dining: Sunspot Bar & Grill - local chefs create an exciting and diverse selection of innovative dishes, bringing new flavors to Manuel Antonio that are sure to please even the most sophisticated palates, using only the finest seafood, meats, poultry and ingredients in our dishes. Most items are prepared on the grill and all dishes are accented with fresh herbs and spices grown and prepared locally.    
 
Activities:  So much to do in the area - in addition to relaxing in one of Costa Rica's most beautiful hotels.  But while you're here, we recommend you try your hand at fishing (both sport and inshore fishing), horseback riding, visiting a private spice farm, kayak through the mangroves for wildlife viewing, walk the suspension bridges to view birds from the canopy level, white water rafting, or take surfing lessons!

  • Provide large natural areas and biological corridors for wildlife throughout our property. We have reforested large areas and planted 10,000 endemic trees in the private reserve at Makanda, this is an ongoing project with no introduction of exotic species (plants not from Costa Rica).
  • Participate in local conservation efforts and support National Parks and reserves. We run weekly beach clean-ups and promote further environmental education and activities.
  • Not sell items made from endangered species, threatened species, corals or tropical hardwoods.
  • Respect local people, culture and traditions and promote and support local cultural events and activities. Our staff is comprised of members from only the surrounding local communities.
  • Support local businesses and suppliers wherever possible, his has two purposes, it supports local markets and also reduces the large carbon emissions associated with importation.
  • Not sell dishes in our restaurant made from endangered or threatened species, such as Marlin, Swordfish, Chilean Sea bass.
  • Reduce our water consumption as much as possible, educating our staff and guests on ways to conserve water. The hotel is implementing the use of water saving appliances such as water conserving toilets, as well as watering restrictions for gardeners and the use of indigenous plant species adapted to local weather conditions.
  • Reduce our energy consumption as much as possible, educating our staff and guests on ways to conserve energy. Makanda is implementing the use of energy saving appliances throughout the hotel.
  • Recycle, reuse and reduce our solid waste that we produce and use environmentally sound methods of rubbish disposal. We currently recycle all glass, aluminum and plastics. We compost all our organic kitchen and garden waste to use for planting and as a natural fertilizer.
  • Our administrative offices have converted to a paperless system as much as possible. Information is printed only as needed and all print paper is recycled to use both sides whenever possible.
  • Use certified biodegradable and eco-friendly cleaning, kitchen and gardening products wherever possible to reduce or eliminate contamination of our ecosystems.
